The former Yugoslav republic of Slovenia shares a border with Italy to the west, Austria to the north, Hungary to the east and Croatia to the south. Slavic peoples settled the area now known as Slovenia in the sixth century. Hungary made it a province in the eleventh century with Austria taking control in the sixteenth century. Later the Austro-Hungarian Empire absorbed the territory until the end of the First World War. It was briefly a part of the Kingdom of Croats, Serbs and Slovenes which became Yugoslavia in 1929. In 1991 Slovenia was the first of the Yugoslav republics to declare independence. Today the Republic of Slovenia is governed by two legislative branches known as the National Assembly and the National Council. The area of just over 20,000 sq km (nearly 8,000 sq miles) boasts a population of approximately 2 million people.
The Slovenian Alps, which are densely forested, are among the chief tourist attractions for the Republic as are the coastal beaches on the northern end of the Adriatic Sea. Mining, metallurgy, manufacturing (trucks and cars) and textiles are among the important Slovene industries.
Since the Carolingian Empire of the eighth century Roman Catholicism has dominated the religious landscape of Slovenia claiming about 96% of the population. About one percent of the population is Muslim.
Stone-Campbell Movement
During the 1995-1996 academic year the family of Monty and Libby Lynn, a professor from Abilene Christian University, Texas (an a cappella Churches of Christ affiliated institution) taught at Slovenia’s University of Maribor on a Fulbright Grant. While in Maribor the Lynns held worship in their home but were unable to stay long enough to see a congregation established. While there Lynn also completed a research project on Slovene culture and religion commissioned by Nations University. At this same time an American evangelistic team was making preparations to locate in Ljubljana, the capital city.
