Background
Gibraltar is a tiny but strategically important place located at the southern tip of Spain and the Iberian Peninsula. The total land mass of the British dependency is 6.5 sq km. Ceded to Great Britain by Spain by the 1713 Treaty of Utrecht it was formally declared a colony in 1830. In 1967 and 2002 Gibraltarians held referendums to remain a British dependency despite Spanish pressure. Gibraltar benefits from extensive shipping trade, offshore banking and as an international conference center. Tourism is another significant factor in the economic life of the dependency. The population estimate in 2003 was 27,776. Of the population almost 77% claim faith in the Roman Catholic tradition, Church of England, 7%, Muslim 7%, no affiliation 7%, Jewish 2%.
In the 1990 and 2003 editions of Mac Lynn's Churches of Christ around the World list an unconfirmed a cappella Church of Christ under the leadership of Francisco Baldachino at 6/13 Parady's Passage. This congregation was known to have existed before 1976.
